Learning Activity 3.5, Task 4: What do I believe in?
In school, there are many rules and policies laid out that demand students obey them. However, if I were to pick from the best policy from policies such as dress codes, suspensions and expulsions, and restorative justice, I believe that restorative justice is the best. Restorative justice seeks to examine the harmful impact of a crime and then determines what can be done to repair that harm while holding the person who caused it accountable for his or her actions. Today I'll cover my reasons, which include its compatibility with a school atmosphere, its social aspect, and its positive effects.
Firstly, while many people argue that restorative justice has its flaws, in regard to a schooling atmosphere, restorative justice can do a lot of good. For example, people argue it can only be solved in a case-for-case-styled way and is unrealistic. However, in a school atmosphere, problems are often solved in a case-for-case-styled way anyway, with each child getting a considerable amount of attention to try to solve issues. Secondly, restorative justice works to be just on a social and empathetic level, which works well with the social classes of school. To be able to work an issue out with socially and emotionally aware justice is the ideal situation to solve in-school problems. Thirdly, the positive effects of restorative justice is undeniable, even by critics. Restorative justice not only creates empowerment and areas for healing for students, but it also holds responsibility to the students in the wrong. This creates a space where people can become friends and heal from any past wrongs that take place in the school.
In conclusion, restorative justice is one of the best policies a school can have. Realistically, fights, stealing, and bullying do happen in school. It's up to the school to solve it in the most appropriate way possible. This can be done through implementing a known restorative justice policy, which not only fits with the school atmosphere as we covered but also creates pathways for socially aware reconciling which shines with its positive effects.
